Generally, soldiers can consume food and water from airtight containers
after personnel decontaminate the containers. Discard unprotected food and
water except in extreme emergencies.

water only when there is no practical alternative.

Decontamination.
Methods of decontaminating subsistence are described in the following
subparagraphs.
Figure 1-24 summarizes methods of decontaminating food,
personnel, and materiel.
a. Nuclear.
There are two types of nuclear contamination: induced
radiation and fallout. Food is contaminated by induced radiation only if it
is very close to a nuclear blast.
Fallout may contaminate food that is
miles away from the blast site.
