Select the desired color comparison tube (marked 1, 5, or 10)
based on the chlorine residual that you desire.
o
Place one test tablet into the color comparison tube cap.
Crush it with the bottom of the test tablet bottle. Put the
crushed tablet into the color comparison tube.
o
Flush the spigots of the water container that you are
checking.
Fill the tube to a point that is just below the
color band.
o
Place the cap onto the color comparison tube.
Shake the tube
until the test tablet is dissolved completely.
o
Compare the color shade of the water with the color band on
the comparison tube. The water is safe to use if the color of
the water is the same shade or darker than the color band on
the tube.
Disinfect the water if the color is lighter than
the color band on the tube.
If a chlorination kit is not
available, ask your commander to get the medical activity or
the water supply unit to test the water. If you cannot test
the water, disinfect it before use.

(2) Disinfecting Water in 5-Gallon Cans.
You can disinfect a
5-gallon can of water by using chlorine ampules.
To do so, follow these
procedures:
