microbiological examinations of raw and treated water are required on a routine basis at water point
sites.
(1) Water quality analysis set: purification. The WQAS-P is the replacement kit for Water
Quality Analysis Set: Engineer (WQAS-ENG). The WQAS-P gives the water treatment operator the
ability to detect rapidly five water quality parameters: temperature, pH, total dissolved solids, turbidity,
and free available chlorine. It also contains the M272 Chemical Agents Water Testing Kit which tests
for hazardous levels of lewisit nerve, cyanide, and mustard agents. It is primarily used by water
purification personnel that operate DS and GS water purification equipment. Water personnel use the
unit during water point reconnaissance missions to assess the suitability of raw water sources and during
water purification/distribution operations to assess the quality of finished water. Table 1 contains the
test kit capabilities.
(2) Water quality analysis set: preventive medicine (WQAS-PM). The WQAS-PM is
issued to Army preventive medicine units, and can be used in the field or at remote sites. It consists of
five individually packaged colorimetric test kits and a spectrophotometer. It can determine the amount
of free acidity; chlorides; dissolved oxygen; fluorides; ferrous, ferric, and total iron; ammonia nitrogen;
nitrate nitrogen; pH; turbidity; zinc; and sulfate. New versions of the kit contain additional test kits for
arsenic, cyanide, and magnesium. Table 3 contains the test kit capabilities.
