Monitoring the Positioning and Adjusting of Trailer. Properly positioning the trailer is important for correct hookup to the
water source. Position the units so that no additional equipment is necessary to operate the raw water pumps, the distribution
pumps, and the backwash pump. Ensure that the truck cab is positioned with the water source on the right side. Also, check
that the front end of the trailer is slightly lower than the rear end (this allows the water to drain) and that adjustments are made
to the landing gear to maintain this balance. As a further measure, ensure that the trailer is on a level grade not more than 2%
side-to-side, and that the wheel chocks are under the wheels to prevent the trailer from moving.
Before setting up equipment, you must monitor the adjusting of the trailer. See that personnel place load boards under
the landing gear, lower the loading gear, and unhook the trailer from the tow tractor. Remind them that adjustments to the
landing gear are made by using the bubble level mounted on the ROWPU so that the front end is 1/2 bubble lower than the
back of the trailer. This is to ensure that there is enough stability for the ROWPU to operate properly.
Supervising Unloading of Equipment. Remind personnel to properly unload the equipment in a sequence of steps that will
allow for correct hookup to the intake and distribution systems. Ensure a crew of three personnel starts with the cover to the
high pressure pump assembly, loosening the straps holding the generator ladder, lowering the generator ladder, positioning
handrails, and loosening straps to the high pressure pump. See that one crew member enters the van from the raw water side
with two crew members on the ground outside. Ensure that the crew member in the van opens the tie-down straps on the
water pump and passes the electrical cable to the outside crew members. See that the inside crew member prepares the chain
hoist for use. Finally, see that the inside crew member opens the cyclone separator frame, ground rods, hammer, and access
ladders and hands them to the outside crew for assembly and setup.
Monitoring Setup of Raw Water Intake System. Ensure that based upon the type of water source, personnel set up the raw
water intake system properly. To do this, you need to ensure that the pump is in the correct location. If the water source is a
river, or has a prevailing flow, the pump is positioned upstream of the cyclone separator. When working with narrow rivers
with deep water, ensure that personnel place the intake strainer in the center of the river. With wide rives, they need to place
the intake strainer at least 50 feet from the shore. With ocean beaches, they need to place the intake strainer as far out as
possible. With flat tidal beaches, ensure they place the pump according to tide conditions.
In addition to placement, you will ensure that the proper equipment is carried to the raw water pump location, such as the
intake strainer, raw water suction hose sections, anchor tie-down rope, and anchor.
Supervising Preparation of Diesel Generator. As a
supervisor, you will ensure that the personnel use ground rod assembly
NSN 5975-00-878-3791 with the special ROWPU cables to property ground the generator and the ROWPU. Also, ensure
that personnel ready the diesel generator by locating the three ground rod sections with cable clamps and couplings at least 8
feet into the ground. Proper connection and
